Participate Actively in the Profession
- Identifies and participates in communities of practice within the field of Educational Technology
While being involved in EDCI 66000A, I learned about the various
communities that I could join to strengthen my knowledge in instructional
design. When I started Module 1 in the course, the module focused on joining
Purdue’s Facebook page for learning design and technology
(http:www.facebook.com/purduelearningdesignandtechnology), and to also
subscribe to the LDT program listserv (https://lists.purdue.edu/mailman/listinfo/edtech-l.
This allows me to receive information on upcoming webinars at Purdue and
to stay connected with a community of learners for instructional design.
Another social networking group that I joined is the Purdue LD & T Online Students on Facebook. This group is valuable to me to ask for advice on certain instructional design topics or technology tools. Actually within this group, I asked for a list of professionals in instructional design that I can follow on Twitter in order to receive information. I will utilize the information given by current and alumni students within this group and apply it to situation that I encounter in my career.
Right now, I am getting ready to renew my membership to ASTD, American Society of Training and Development. Many times, I have utilized the ASTD website to find out more information on digital technology replacing textbooks, or various other topics on eLearning for my own interest or to share with other educators. This website is also great for resume posting in the field of ID & T.
LinkedIn is a great place to join communities of practice. In LinkedIn I have the following groups: Instructional Design and E-Learning Professionals Group, ASTD, ISTE (International Society of Technology in Education, and Purdue Association of Learning Design and Technology (PALDT). When I was researching different Learning Management Systems (LMS) to host a SCORM package, it was interesting reading the advice form the E-Learning Professionals Group and when the different opinions were in regards to what was the best or the easiest to operate.
It is my intention to keep growing my learning communities of practice as I expand professionally. I plan to follow groups on Twitter, and join more groups on LinkedIn to keep current in my field and to help find answers to issues that I may encounter. I find it very helpful to learn from my peers in order to better yourself personally and professionally in the field.
