Communicate Knowledge
- Communicates effectively in oral and written formats
- Effectively communicates content through the design and delivery of teaching/learning activities that integrate content and pedagogy
- Demonstrates the ability to adapt instruction and assessment techniques to the needs of diverse learners
During the course of EDCI 66000B, Learning Design and Technology Seminar, I had a great opportunity to develop a mini workshop on the topic of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for Educators in Northwest Indiana based on a need that existed. At the time, the Common Core State Standards were more rigorous, higher-order standards that were new to educators within Indiana and a gap existed on what teachers actually needed to know about the CCSS. I communicated with administrators in K-12 education through surveys, emails, and conversations and many administrators knew some of the change that would take place with the CCSS but felt teachers didn't have this same information. It was very exciting to see this project come together quickly with various communications with educators, and other educational service centers to develop the materials. In fact I worked with a subject matter expert that was the past recipient of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Secondary Math Teaching for Math Resources. The workshop included the basics, structure, and shifts of the CCSS for Math and English language arts. In addition it helped provide information on how to prepare students for the CCSS, and what resources are readily available. I delivered the workshop to 17 educators with a timeframe of one and a half hours.
In addition, it has been great to work with my colleagues in EDCI 67200, Advanced Practice in Learning System Design. My partners and I have the accepted challenge to facilitate the complex case of Lynn Dixon. In order to write the objectives, case summary, feedback form, and discussion questions, we all had to communicate via email and on our discussion boards and group Wiki. When facilitating the Lynn Dixon case to our peers, we had to change up a few of our discussion questions to keep the discussion "going" and for it to become more "in-depth" during the week to meet the various needs of our peers who were learning about the case and we made this decision by communicating.
It was also exciting to develop an instructional plan for the flipped classroom, "Instructional Plan-Tools for the Flipped Classroom" for others to be able to communicate to educators on how to utilize TED.ED (http://ed.ted.com) within the middle and/or high schools. In order to design the instruction for this project, I had to be very detailed and precise in my writing so that one who has never delivered the training before could do it with ease.
In order to communicate to educational administrators in Indiana regarding the new changes to the Indiana Code regarding teacher evaluation, I created an e-Learning Project in Articulate software and Moodle called, "Evaluation of Teachers-e-Learning Course." This allowed educators within Indiana to review this module to understand the best way to use a rubric to evaluate teachers to collect evidence. This module has been used by administrators that cannot make the face-to-face trainings, and for new administrators. I had to take into consideration the various needs of learners to develop this eLearning module. One way that I achieved this task was to make the module easier to navigate by various learners such as those that are and are not familiar with technology. To aid the learners that are not familiar with technology, I created a tutorial within the module to provide direction as well as explanations of the buttons. Besides putting audio recordings for each slide, a script was included that a learner could read with the audio or instead of the audio meet the needs of the audio and visual learners. Assessments within the module were created using "fill in the blank", "matching" and "check all that apply" to provide variety for diverse learners.
By creating all the above mentioned projects; I have learned that it's important to communicate with all stakeholders in a timely manner in order to have successful experiences. It's important to communicate in instructional design projects to make sure that all are in agreement in the design and development; otherwise unexpected changes may take place effecting the project, timeline, and budget. I also realize that there are various ways to communicate with others through videos, wikis, surveys and emails and I will continue to use these tools in my career.
